Mrs Helen Antonakaki was born on October 7th, 1971 in Myrtia, the home village of the great poet and writer Nikos Kazantzakis, in the prefecture of Heraklion in Crete. In 2005 she took up Byzantine Iconography in a workshop in the Church of Saint Ierotheos, which is located in the municipality of Peristeri.  ……………..

“In the art of iconography there are rules and codes which the iconographer must strictly adhere to in order to reach the desired result step by step. The icon is not a simple religious painting, but a representation full of symbolism.
The eyes are painted large to remind us that they have seen the "big ones&quot, the head is often unnaturally enlarged, symbolizing wisdom from above, the nose is narrow and elongated because it does not perceive/conceive/comprehend/understand/ the worldly things. To transform a piece of wood into a worship medium such as an icon requires patience, discipline, simplicity, quietness, devotion.
Love of art and faith is a prerequisite for engaging in the art of iconography. Moreover, engaging in this art offers serenity and a journey into a world as old as our faith.”
