Artist Profile:

Cecilia A. Lamptey

CeciAde Lamptey was born into an artistic family – Dad is an accomplished artist in his own right – She describes herself as a Cosmopolitan Artist born to a Ghanaian father and a Nigerian Mother.

Educated at the Yaba College of Technology in Lagos, Nigeria, CeciAde is a sought-after artist whose work is in personal collections and galleries across the globe. CeciAde has exhibited her works in Ghana, Nigeria, China, Europe, Canada and America.

Her recent selection to be part of Ghana’s Government’s 2018 artistic team to China for a residency in traditional folk handicraft cements her reputation as a global art ambassador from Africa with a universal appeal.

Painting in acrylics and oil, her use of colours reveals a deep insight into an artist who is daring and pushes the boundaries of our imagination. Textile designing also comes naturally to CeciAde. Using African patterns and symbols of divination, her Batik and Adire motifs reveals an intricate sense of geometry and a delicate balance to achieve a symmetry with colours. A process she describes as Neo-Africanisms.

As an artist, CeciAde is always inspired by the spiritual and physical forces of nature.  These twin forces provide the energy and creativity that shapes her artistic engagement with my society.  Her vision is to explore through the medium of art some of the more profound and critical issues facing humanity.

Her new project--- Motherhood in Africa: Mystical Women in Spirit and Form -- captures the resilience, strength and authority of women in African societies. She sees women as embodying the material and spiritual foundation of African societies.

This new project challenges the viewer to question the sources and methods of African women’s strength in an otherwise patriarchal culture. Her use of electronic power circuit boards and panels provides that metaphor of women’s strength and power.

Here, one is reminded of the narration in the classic, Things Fall Apart.  “When a man falls into misfortune, he seeks solace at his mother's place. And, the last rites of a man are performed by his mother's people. Nneka - Mother is Supreme!”
